Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is located between Dominical and Uvita in the Costa Ballena Region and shares the property with Villas Alturas on the San Martin Norte road. The facility receives animals from the Costa Rican government after they are confiscated from people that are in the illegal pet trade or that trying to illegally domesticating them. The Sanctuary has also have become the 'go to people' when injured animals are found by locals.
As of December 2014 Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is caring for over 75 animals including three types of monkeys, an anteater, coatis, paca, hawks, scarlet macaws, and many others. The sanctuary is a non-profit organization that depends on donations, volunteers, and educational tours to create revenue so they can employ full-time veterinarians and purchase food. If you would like to get involved, visit their website at www.villasalturas.com to learn more.
